Earth observations from diverse sources, including satellite, airborne, in situ platforms and citizen observatories, when integrated together, provide powerful tools for understanding the past and present conditions of Earth systems. As urban areas continue to develop at a fast pace and we are influenced by the environments we live in, understanding this environment is absolutely essential for a multitude of issues including sustainable development, housing and urban planning, sanitation, poverty reduction, climate change, disaster risk reduction, access to information and capacity building.

The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is working across numerous societal benefit areas with a number of areas given priority, these include the Paris Agreement for Climate Change, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

Steven Ramage, head of stakeholder engagement and external relations at GEO will talk about how the global GEO community is working to sustain our planet’s future in light of urbanization and other activities impacting how we live our lives.
